Getting Married in Church – What You Need to Know

Congratulations on your decision to begin this lifelong journey! At Abundant Grace Christian Community (AGCC), we believe marriage is sacred and should be approached prayerfully and orderly. Below are the steps and requirements for a church wedding:

1. Notify the Church Early

  • Kindly inform the Church of your relationship early—before it gets serious.
  • The Church will grant approval for you to begin marriage counselling sessions.

2. Submit a Letter of Conviction

Each party is to submit:

  • A handwritten letter stating how you met, conviction about marriage, courtship duration, and what you admire about your partner.
  • Two passport-sized photographs per person.

3. Intending Couple’s Questionnaire

  • You are required to complete a truthful questionnaire for record and guidance.

4. Attend and Complete Marriage Counselling

  • Mandatory 6-month counselling at AGCC.
  • No counselling, no church wedding. No exceptions.

5. If Your Partner Is from Another Denomination

  • Counselling must be done at the host church.
  • A confidential letter of introduction from their Pastor is required, confirming their identity, character, and marital status.

6. Do Not Fix Dates or Print Invitation Cards Yet

  • Please do not fix a date or print cards until you receive clearance from the Church.
  • Untruthfulness or secrecy may result in cancellation of the wedding.
  • If courtship ends, it must be discussed formally with the Pastor and counsellors.

7. Medical Examinations Are Mandatory

Tests required include:

  • Blood Group, Genotype, HIV, STD, Hormonal & Fertility tests
  • Pregnancy test for the bride will be done one week before the wedding at an approved medical center.
  • Pregnancy before wedding = disqualification from Church wedding.

8. Family Consent

  • You must submit written parental consent.
  • If a parent is late, an older family member must give consent with a passport photo and phone contact.

9. Legal Marriage Certificate

  • Obtain a Marriage License from a government registry and submit to the Church at least one week before the wedding.

10. Wedding Date

  • Choose a date in agreement with the Church.
  • Weddings will not be held on:
    • Special Holy Ghost Service weekends
    • Annual Convention

    • Holy Ghost Congress

    • Let’s Go-A-Fishing at Easter/Christmas

11. Wedding Dress Guidelines

  • Wedding dress and chief bridesmaid’s dress must be submitted for inspection 2 weeks before the wedding.
  • No sleeveless, transparent, or revealing outfits are allowed.
  • Bridal train must dress modestly.
  • Hair covering required for female train members.

12. Wedding Programme

  • Must follow the RCCG wedding order of service.
  • Draft must be reviewed and approved by the Church at least two weeks prior.

13. Pre-Wedding Rehearsals

  • Mandatory for the couple, best man, and chief bridesmaid.
  • To be held no later than 48 hours before the wedding.

14. Wedding Bible & Rings

  • The Church will use the Bible in joining couples.
  • Wedding rings will be blessed in the vestry after the service.

15. Wedding Certificate

  • You will receive a wedding certificate, counter-signed by your parents or other witnesses. Kindly speak with the Church Administrator on this matter.
